How Energy Healing Helped Me Write

When I sat in front of an energy healer named Debra, I’d been taking Mila’s herbs for 24 hours and I felt surprisingly good. My bowling ball head was lighter, my girl parts didn’t burn, and my energy level wasn’t dragging. I prayed the herbs would permanently heal me.

“First, I’ll scan your body,” Debra said.

I’d never been to an energy healer before, but James said she was amazing and I had to see her.

“Okay,” I said even though I had no idea what that meant.

I closed my eyes as Debra held her hands about two inches away from my body. I could feel her slowly move down from my head, neck, chest, and torso. When she got to my lower back she paused.

“There’s heartbreak in your lower back.”

“Yes.”

“No. There’s heartbreak in your lower back.” She emphasized the word heartbreak like she was overwhelmed by the gravity of it.

There it was – proof my back spasms were actual heartbreak.

“I know what you’re referring to.”

“I’m sorry that happened to you.”

“Thank you.” I was sorry it happened to me too.

“You have a lot of stuck energy in your body. Especially in your solar plexus, sacral, and root chakras.”

I had no idea what any of that meant, but I nodded like I did.

“Are you a writer?” she asked.

“Yes.” How did she know that?

“Have you been writing lately?”

“No.”

“I’m going to clear your chakras. Afterwards, you might feel your mojo increase.”

“I don’t need my mojo to increase!” My eyes opened and I looked at her. “I mean, I totally want to meet My Great Love and live happily ever after, but first I need my health to improve.”

“Moving this stuck energy will help your body heal itself. And don’t be surprised if you suddenly have the urge to write. Just relax and I’ll do some clearing, okay?”

“Okay.” I didn’t know if I believed in any of it, but I figured it was worth a try. So, I closed my eyes and did my best to relax.

A couple weeks after Debra cleared my chakras, I zombie walked from the couch to my desk and wrote 12 pages about a woman I had never thought about before. She was a set decorator in her late 30’s who had breast cancer.

The story opened on a rainy night in Hollywood when she kisses a man she shouldn’t and they end up at the Roosevelt Hotel.

Lyrical, dreamlike prose flowed as if it came from somewhere else. When I read it back, I remembered that as Debra cleared my chakras, memories had flashed behind my closed eyes, moments at Mansfield and my childhood, and a moment when I stood in the dank lobby of the Roosevelt Hotel before it had been renovated.

The same sad Christmas tree and colored twinkle lights that failed to spread cheer when I’d been there many years ago had magically moved out of my stuck chakras onto pages.

The words above are an excerpt from my memoir in progress, PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS. This story is a little more magical now that I'm pitching agents and editors because while I was sick, a few pages at a time, I wrote an entire novel from those pages born during an energy healing session.

And in my memoir, PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS, I wrote about that energy healing session that dislodged a stuck story and I continued to write about writing the novel ALL THE MOMENTS IN BETWEEN on days I was clear headed enough to write. Recently, I had the pleasure of pitching some agents in person and it was so cool to be able to say, "I have two books to pitch you and they're kind of tied together." Like so many magical things along my journey healing Chronic Lyme Disease, I never thought I'd write a story about how energy healing me write. Yet, here we are!

So, if you're having writer's block or feel like something is blocking your creativity, you might want to have a session with an energy healer. Even if you have no idea what that means.

Energy flowing to a woman's chakras.
