The Stories Behind Things

I recently had the pleasure of being a guest on Keepsake Chronicles, a podcast about the stories behind things. I write about my Granny a lot because she was an amazing storyteller and incredible cook who never gave me a recipe without bestowing a hidden message. Like the night we stood at the kitchen sink washing and cutting up broccoli and she told me that I might want to rethink moving in with my boyfriend because "a girl can get a reputation."

As we cooked together, Granny told me stories about growing up in Hoboken, like the time Frank Sinatra took her to a dance and she’d had nothing to wear, so she dyed a pair of shoes and then sat in a corner mortified all night because the shoe dye stunk.

Granny died in 2003 and I'm lucky to have her silverware, some of her pots and pans, her china, and a couple of funky roosters that I just love. Granny had great style and I consider her belongings to be treasures because I believe they hold her energy. During my conversation with JD on the Keepsakes Chronicles, we discussed how I believe that Granny is with me all the time, watching me cook, and wondering why I'm doing things the way I do them. We talked about how I decided what to keep when I got rid of everything and launched a digital nomad journey. And we talked about how different people relate to things differently. To hear the whole episode, please tap the link below. What about you? How do you relate to things? And what keepsakes do you treasure?
